What Is a Garment Stocklot? A Plain Explanation

The direct answer: a garment stocklot is a quantity of finished clothing that already exists, was produced against a specific order, and did not reach its original buyer. Because the production cost is sunk, it is sold below retail and usually well below the factory’s normal wholesale price, which is where the opportunity sits.

Part of the buyer journey: Understanding Stocklots: The Model From the Inside — stage 1 of 8, with the other guides for this stage.

Why these lots exist at all

Garment production is committed well in advance. Fabric is knitted or woven, cut, sewn, washed, packed and shipped over a cycle measured in months. Somewhere in that cycle, something changes: the buyer cancels, the season shifts, the buyer changes its buying office, or the quantity is simply no longer wanted at that price.

When that happens, the goods are finished, packed and sitting in a warehouse. The factory has already paid for the fabric, the labour and the packaging. Selling the lot at a discount recovers part of that cost, which is why it is available to buyers like you.

What you are actually receiving

You are receiving real, finished, wearable clothing. It is not seconds in the ordinary sense and it is not defective stock. It is surplus against a specific order, which means it carries the specification of that order: the fabric, the sizing, the colours and the quality level the original buyer specified.

That last point cuts both ways. A lot made for a European premium buyer may be better than you need. A lot made for a very price-led buyer may be lighter fabric than you want. Always check the specification, not just the category.

Why the pricing advantage exists

The seller is not losing money on a good lot; they are recovering sunk cost. But they are still losing the margin they planned, and they would rather keep the machines running than store goods for a year. That is where your leverage is.

The practical consequence is that lot-level pricing varies enormously and is worth negotiating hard, and that the same lot will not be available twice at the same price. Waiting on a good lot has an opportunity cost.

Buyer questions, answered

Is stocklot clothing poor quality?

No. Stocklots were made to the original buyer specification, often a demanding one. Quality varies because different lots came from different buyers and different factories, not because the goods are seconds. The category you will struggle to find good quality in is whatever sits at the bottom of the value chain.

Why do stocklots cost so much less than retail?

Because the production cost has already been incurred and the seller is recovering rather than earning. Retail price includes a retail margin, a distribution margin, a marketing cost and a risk provision that all disappear in a stocklot sale.

Can I rebrand or relabel stocklots?

That depends entirely on whose brand is on the goods. Unbranded or house-brand surplus is normally fine. Goods carrying a third party’s brand are subject to that brand owner’s rights, and relabelling them is a different question with a different answer. Confirm the situation for the specific lot before you plan around it.
