Payment Terms and Negotiation With Pakistani Suppliers

The direct answer: the payment structure is usually fixed and the lot-level terms are where the real negotiation happens. If you spend your negotiating capital on price alone, you will give away more on grading and packing than you saved.

Part of the buyer journey: Pakistan Sourcing Map: Which City to Buy In, and What Each One Actually Supplies — stage 8 of 8, with the other guides for this stage.

What is usually fixed

The deposit and balance structure is fairly standard: a deposit on order, a balance before or at loading, sometimes against inspection or a shipping document. Large deposits for a new buyer are less standard than they should be.

Currency and payment method are also often settled, because they reflect the supplier’s own banking arrangements rather than a negotiating position.

What you can actually negotiate

Grading and separation. Ask whether seconds can be separated and priced separately, or excluded. This is often worth more than a price discount because it removes inventory you cannot sell.

Also negotiable: packing format and carton count, whether trims can be supplied compliant with your market, partial shipment, and the inspection window before the balance.

How to negotiate without damaging the relationship

Negotiate on the specification first and the price second. A buyer who is flexible on terms and firm on specification is easier to work with than one who pushes price first, and suppliers remember which kind they are dealing with.

Do not push a price that makes the lot unviable for them. A supplier who loses on a deal will not prioritise you next time, and next time is where your supply comes from.

Buyer questions, answered

What deposit do Pakistani suppliers normally ask for?

It varies by supplier and relationship, and it should be modest for a new buyer. A large deposit is a poor sign about the supplier, not a normal commercial requirement.

Can I negotiate excluding seconds from the lot?

Often yes, and it is one of the most valuable things to negotiate. If the seller cannot separate them, ask them to price them separately so you can decide on the first-grade portion.

How long is a quoted price valid?

Ask explicitly. Prices on stocklots move as lots age and interest changes, and treating an open-ended quote as a fixed deal is a common source of disagreement.
