Moving a Stocklot Quickly: Turn and Cash Cycle

The direct answer: in stocklots, a lower margin that turns in three weeks beats a higher margin that turns in three months, because your capital is working again. Every week a lot sits unsold is a week you cannot buy the next one, and the next one may be considerably better.

Part of the buyer journey: Start Small: First Business, First Lot, First Season — stage 5 of 8, with the other guides for this stage.

Turn compounds, margin does not

Capital returned after a month can be deployed again immediately. The same capital returned after three months can be deployed once. Over a year the difference is not a percentage improvement, it is a different business.

This is why fast-moving basics beat slow-moving high-margin products for most new buyers, and why the fashionable lot that sits is the expensive one.

What determines turn

Price relative to the market, breadth of channel, and clarity of the product. A lot priced sensibly, listed on two or three channels and described accurately will sell faster than a cheaper lot that is poorly presented.

The biggest single determinant is usually price positioning. Buyers compare against the retail product they know, so if your price does not obviously beat it, the sale does not happen.

Actions that reduce days on hand

List on arrival rather than preparing afterwards. Keep the range narrow and deep rather than wide and thin, because depth in the sizes your customers want is what sells. And buy the next lot before the current one sells out, so there is no gap.

Track sell-through weekly, not monthly, because a week of data is enough to change a price before the month is lost.

Buyer questions, answered

Is lower margin on faster-selling stock the right trade?

Usually yes for a cash-constrained buyer, because capital efficiency compounds. It is less obviously right once you have enough capital and enough suppliers that you can buy deep and hold, at which point margin and depth start to matter more.

How do I know if a lot is not selling?

By the absence of the signals you would expect: no questions, no saves, no adds to cart, no DMs. Absence of engagement is the early warning, and it appears well before absence of sales. Check it weekly rather than waiting for the sales figure.

Should I discount a slow lot?

Yes, early. Holding full price on unsold stock costs you margin twice: once on the eventual discount and once on the capital you could have used. Set a decision date in advance so the discount is planned rather than panicked.
