How to Read a Garment Stocklot Listing Properly

The direct answer: a listing is useful when it tells you the specification, the size run, the quantity, the grade and the packing. It is useless when it tells you the fabric is good quality and the wholesale price is unbeatable. Read the specification fields closely and treat the promotional fields as zero information.

Part of the buyer journey: Understanding Stocklots: The Model From the Inside — stage 1 of 8, with the other guides for this stage.

Fields worth reading closely

Composition and fabric weight, quantity per size, total units, grade percentage, packing format, and carton dimensions. Those six fields determine whether the lot works for you and roughly what it should cost.

The size run is the one people skip. A lot of 5,000 units with 2,800 in two sizes is a lot of 5,000 units on the invoice and about 2,200 units you can actually sell.

Fields that carry no information

Premium quality, excellent quality, latest design, unbeatable price, direct from factory. These are claims with no measurable content and they should not influence your decision at all.

Photographs of garments laid out neatly are presentation, not evidence. They tell you the category and roughly the colour. They do not tell you the weight, the finish or the run.

Turning a description into terms

Take the listing and write your own specification from it, then send that back to the seller for confirmation. Where the seller corrects you, you have learned something. Where they confirm it, you now have a written specification to inspect against, which is the only thing that makes a later quality dispute resolvable.

Buyer questions, answered

Is the price shown on a listing the real price?

Usually it is an anchor for a single category rather than a price for the lot. Lots are priced on size run, grade and quantity together, so treat any displayed price as an indication of scale rather than a quote.

Why do sellers not publish the size run?

Some will if asked directly. Those that will not are usually hoping you will not notice that it is lopsided. Asking for the run as cartons first and pieces second is the fastest way to get an honest answer.

How many photographs are enough to judge a lot?

Enough to confirm category, colour and condition of a few units, plus one of the carton and label. Beyond that, the information you need does not come from photographs at all — it comes from a sample and a live check.
