Presenting Clothing Stocklots for Sale

The direct answer: when there is no brand, presentation is the brand. Customers buying unbranded clothing are deciding on the photograph and the description alone, so those two things carry the weight a brand label would otherwise carry.

Part of the buyer journey: Selling Channels: Markets, Online Platforms, Bins and Chains — stage 6 of 8, with the other guides for this stage.

Photographs that sell unbranded clothing

Shoot flat on a plain background for shape and detail, and on a person or hanger for scale. Include the label and any tag, because composition and origin are exactly what a buyer of unbranded goods is trying to establish.

Light it properly. A garment photographed in bad light reads as lower quality than it is, which is a waste of good stock.

List measurements, not adjectives

Measure the actual garment: chest, length, sleeve, shoulder. Publish those numbers. A buyer cannot judge fit from "true to size" but can judge it from a measurement, and this is the single biggest reduction in returns for unbranded goods.

State the composition precisely. Cotton percentage matters to buyers and it is the detail that distinguishes a considered listing from a lazy one.

Write the description for a sceptic

Describe the actual garment: what it is, what it is made of, how it fits, and what condition it is in. Unbranded goods attract more scepticism than branded ones, and honesty in the description is what earns the sale.

Mention the category and the fit in the first line, because that is what search and browsing are matching on.

Buyer questions, answered

How many photographs do I need per product?

Four to six covers nearly everything: front, back, detail, label, and on-body. Beyond that the returns do not fall much further, so the extra effort is better spent on the measurement listing.

Should I photograph the whole lot?

Photograph a representative selection plus the packing, not every unit. Buyers want to know what they are getting, and showing the cartons and the stack is what answers that.

Does good presentation justify a higher price?

Yes, if it reduces uncertainty, because uncertainty is what buyers are really pricing. Accurate measurements and clear photographs reduce returns, and fewer returns is effectively a higher margin.
