How to Confirm the Stock Exists Before You Buy It

The direct answer: confirm stock live, in motion, with a count. Ask the supplier to walk the warehouse on video while counting units into view, ask them to show the packing cartons and the labels, and ask them to repeat the count on a different day. Recommitting to a specific count on a specific day is a much stronger signal than any photograph.

Part of the buyer journey: Find & Verify a Supplier Before Money Moves — stage 2 of 8, with the other guides for this stage.

Make the evidence cost the supplier something

Any photograph can be reused. A live video call at a mutually agreed time, walking to a specific rack, cannot be reused unless the supplier physically has the stock. That is the whole principle: request evidence that only makes sense if the goods are there.

Be reasonable about it. A supplier who agrees to a video check without difficulty is telling you something. A supplier who schedules it for next month is telling you something too.

Count, do not estimate

Ask for the quantity broken down by category, size and colour, and ask for it as cartons first and pieces second, because cartons are what can be counted quickly and pieces are what can be miscounted.

If the numbers do not reconcile, ask for a recount on video. A supplier with real stock recounts calmly. A supplier without it starts changing the specification.

Inspect the packing, not just the garment

The cartons tell you more than the sample does. Stacked and unbranded cartons suggest mixed origin. New branded cartons with a client code suggest brand new production. Overlapping labels suggest goods assembled from several sources.

Ask for the carton markings and, if you are buying enough to justify it, ask for a photograph of the actual load being packed rather than the packing room.

Buyer questions, answered

Can a supplier fake a live video call?

In principle, yes, by showing you a warehouse that is not the one holding your goods. In practice it is rare, because it requires a warehouse, a camera and someone willing to perform. The mitigation is simple: have the person on camera show something you chose in advance, such as a specific carton code you read from their own listing, and ask them to walk to the loading bay and back.

How many photos do I actually need?

Enough to be specific: the garment front and back, the label, the carton, and the stack. More than that rarely adds information. The higher-value check is not more photographs, it is one live video walk through the inventory.

What if a supplier refuses to show stock before a deposit?

Ask for a partial deposit rather than a full one, and make the balance conditional on the video check passing. Suppliers who hold genuine stock almost always accept this structure, because the structure costs them nothing if the stock is real.
