Branded vs Blank (Unbranded) Stocklots: Which Should You Buy?
Branded stocklots sell faster but carry trademark rules: you resell genuine goods, you do not re-brand them, and you follow the market rules where you sell. Blank stock is slower to move but risk-free on branding, and it is the only route for buyers who want their own label.
Part of the buyer journey: Understanding Stocklots: The Model From the Inside — stage 1 of 8, with the other guides for this stage.
Branded stock: fast turn, strict rules
Branded lots — genuine cancelled export orders and overruns from named brands — turn fastest because customers recognise the name. The trade-offs: the brand owner sets how and where the goods may be sold, labels must stay intact, and buyers should expect to document the supply chain if a platform or retailer asks. Buying from a supplier who documents the original order and cancellation protects you.
The margin maths differs too: branded buys at a deep discount to wholesale can carry excellent margins even after slower payment terms from your own retail customers.
Blank stock: flexible, label-ready
Unbranded or blank lots suit buyers running their own label programme, uniform suppliers, and print-on-demand resellers. Turn speed depends entirely on your own distribution, and margins can exceed branded stock because you buy at fabric-plus-make prices.
Blank stock also avoids every trademark question — the reason most export-focused buyers start there.
The decision rule
Choose branded when you have a retail channel that moves recognised names and you will resell as-is. Choose blank when you will re-label, export to markets with strict trademark enforcement, or build your own brand. Mixed lots: expect the branded fraction to sell first — price your plan on the blank fraction.

Buyer questions, answered
Are branded stocklots legal to resell?
Genuine branded goods bought with clean title are resold under the exhaustion rules of your market. Re-labelling or altering branding is not legal without permission.
Which has better margin?
Blank stock can carry higher percentage margins; branded stock turns faster. Your channel decides which wins.
Can I mix both in one container?
Yes — consolidation is common. Keep the lots documented separately for your own accounting and any platform checks.
